Ok. I’m going to get in trouble with Brad for this post, but two things. First, I’m leaving town for the weekend and will be gone before he gets home. Second…

It’s time the truth be told for all the world to hear.

Winston… who I should note is MY dog… is the best dog.

 And I have proof. Just see for yourself.

 

Can you say vigilant? Watch dog extraordinaire? Picture #1. Ears at attention. High alert. Picture #2. Ready to jump through the window to protect me from a rabid squirrel or deadly hummingbird at any moment.

But Picture #3. Seriously, folks. This picture tells the whole story. Duchess… who I hate to have to tell you, but want you to know the truth… is Brad’s dog… yep, there she be. Sprawled on the ottoman. Eyes are wide open, but looking the other way. Just hoping to get petted. Not the least bit concerned about what scary things lurk outside and how she needs to protect me. [Squirrel! (That’s cue word for “Get ready for a random thought to be interjected in my writing.) I have no idea how to keep her eyes from glowing when I take the pic with my iPhone. Anyone know?]

Guess Brad will be waving the white flag. Winston wins!

And, of course, my pups got me to thinking this morning…

We all have to be on our guard. Vigilant. Watchful. High alert. There is much in this world to distract us from what’s important… from what God has called us to do. I often find myself reflecting… Did I waste 30 minutes on Facebook or spend that time in God’s Word? Did I buy something I wanted or did help someone in need? Am I using my talents to serve myself or to serve others? Am I on my own agenda or God’s? Am I checking items off the “good Christian” checklist or am I serving and worshipping out of an abundance of God’s blessing and joy in my life?

The distractions are unlimited. There are plenty of excuses I can make.

But the bottomline remains the same.

My choices tell the real truth about what I say I believe and who I say I am.

The choices aren’t easy, but there is no greater reward.

“Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter 5:8-11 NRSV
