Fighting the Good Fight

Ok. Confession time.
I am competitive.
I said it. I own it. I am it.
Actually, that’s not the whole truth.
I’m not just competitive. I want to win.

The scenario might go something like this. Brad says something. I know he’s wrong. I politely correct him. He claims he is right. I’m certain he is wrong. Can I just drop it? Not a chance. I’m instantly reaching for my phone and googling my way to victory. Brad – 0; Trae – 1.

Maybe… but most likely not. And to complicate matters worse, this story actually has nothing to do with Brad, but it has everything to do with fighting the right battles the right way.

Truth #1: If the battle is about me being right, it’s not the right battle. { You might have to read that more than once to make it stick. }

Second confession. Most of my battles are fought out of my need to be right. Anyone? Anyone?

So what battles do we fight and how? This question has plagued me recently because I’ve encountered more than a few battles… and losing stinks… and conviction stings far worse when I picked the wrong fight or didn’t fight the good fight.

Because I’m a list maker, I’ve had to write down a few reminders for myself. I thought I’d share them with you. I don’t know what battles you’re facing, but I bet it’s a fairly safe to assume that you’re fighting at least one… even if it’s one in your own head. #beentheretoo.

  1. The enemy is the devil. { Not my spouse, kid, friend, coworker, fill-in-the-blank } Ephesians 6:11
  2. I overcome evil with good. { Since the enemy is the devil, I can love and give grace to fill-in-the-blank… } Romans 12:21
  3. God will fight for me. { That likely means in many instances I can just be quiet and walk away. That’s not losing. } Exodus 14:14
  4. The real battle I need to fight is for my faith. { That battle is against the devil, too. } 1 Timothy 6:11-12
  5. I have to stay suited up. { Every. Single. Day. } Galatians 5:10-17
  6. My weapon to wield is the Word of God. { I often need to wield it against myself, but it’s powerful against others, too. I don’t have to prove them wrong or trash them. Just. Speak. Truth. In. Love. } Galatians 5:17; 2 Timothy 3:10-17
  7. I won the only battle that truly matters because Jesus conquered sin and death. { Kingdom priorities. Eyes on eternity. #leavetheresttoGod } 1 Corinthians 15:55-57
