what my epitaph will say.

Brad has said it more than a few times. “Your epitaph is gonna read, ‘She died putting on her lipstick while driving.'”

Well, actually, he said “they” were going to put it on my tombstone, but I think epitaph sounds so much more enlightened. And I should probably ask him who the anonymous “they” is. I might need to add a note to “them” in the “When I Die” folder on my computer. { Yes, I have one, but that’s a topic for another day, }

Here’s what Brad clearly does not understand, and I know this because we once unknowingly purchased a car FOR ME that did not have one, and I hated the car the instant I discovered it and until the day we sold it. He just couldn’t make sense of why it was such a big deal, but I wised up fast, and now it is one of the first things I check for. Yes, of course, you smart girls know what I’m talking about: a lighted mirror on the visor. Hands down, this mirror… coupled with the sun at just the right angle… gives you the absolute best view to put on lipstick, pluck your eyebrows or chin hair, and any other myriad of things you can’t effectively do in the bathroom mirror… especially as you near the mid-century mark. Now I know some of you are wondering why I just don’t give in and purchase a lighted, magnifying mirror to put on my bathroom counter. I thought about that. I thought about it so much I actually made a trip to the local Bed, Bath, and Beyond to try them out. Whoa, Nellie! As if the aisle with all the bathroom scales is not enough to scare you, try looking directly across the same aisle into THOSE mirrors. No, thank you. I do not need that kind of acute awareness on a daily basis. I’ll stick to the lighted visor in the Tahoe, and I’ll risk said epitaph.

All this is fresh on my mind because of a conversation I had with my pastor yesterday. No, we did not discuss lipstick, chin hairs, or tombstones. We talked about reading God’s Word daily… how we both need it like we need breakfast, lunch, and dinner… how it feeds us and encourages us and lights our way… how there is no other substitute for it… how our day is not complete with it.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Psalm 119:105

“The unfolding of your words gives light, it gives understanding to the simple.” Psalm 119:130

“Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.” Psalm 119:133

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11

“May your unfailing love come to me, Lord, your salvation, according to your promise;
then I can answer anyone who taunts me, for I trust in your word.” Psalm 119:42

“You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.” Psalm 119:114
Those are just verses from one chapter in the Bible. I could go on to list so many more… Hebrews 4:12, Isaiah 40:8, Matthew 7:24, and the like. The simple truth is this:

What I can see changes what I do.

That lone chin hair often goes undetected in the bathroom mirror, and my lip liner is certain to be misaligned. But when I have adequate light, it changes what I see… and it changes what I do. Being in God’s Word each day turns the Light on. { Don’t miss the capital L there. } Being in God’s Word every day changes what I can see. Being in God’s Word every day will change what I do.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. Will you?

know Him and make Him known,
